Another year, another cyber-breach. Federal authorities have been brought in to investigate a cyber-security breach of ACT government IT systems.

The security breach was detected in an email gateway system called Barracuda, a globally acknowledged company with over 200,000 global customers, providing solutions for email protection, application and cloud security, network security and data protection.

Although the cause of the attack is still under investigation, Barracuda Networks mentions how both attackers and defenders are harnessing AI and machine learning — the first to craft ever more convincing social engineering attacks and malware; the second to develop ever more intelligent security tools to detect and block these.

With malware tools and infrastructure widely available as-a-service, cyber-attacks are within the reach of more criminals, powering the spread of ransomware, extortion and more — homing in on businesses with many users, devices, applications, and active data far beyond what was once somewhat known.
